Methodology (WUR 3.0): Five pillars and 18 indicators. Overall pillar weightings: Teaching 29.5%, Research Environment 29%, Research Quality 30%, Industry 4%, International Outlook 7.5%. The “Studying abroad” / outbound-exchange metric exists but is weighted 0% (a temporary provision dating to COVID-19). Bibliometric data are supplied by Elsevier (Scopus); per THE’s methodology the 2026 edition drew on 174.9 million citations to 18.7 million journal articles, reviews, conference proceedings, books and book chapters published over five years (2020–2024) across more than 28,700 Scopus-indexed journals. The Academic Reputation Survey was carried out between November 2024 and January 2025; combined with the 2024 survey it yielded more than 108,000 responses.
The five pillars decompose into 18 indicators:
- Teaching (29.5%): teaching reputation 15%, student:staff ratio 4.5%, doctorate:bachelor’s ratio 2%, doctorate:staff ratio 5.5%, institutional income 2.5%.
- Research Environment (29%): research reputation 18%, research income 5.5%, research productivity 5.5%.
- Research Quality (30%): citation impact 15%, research strength 5%, research excellence 5%, research influence 5%.
- Industry (4%): industry income 2%, patents 2%.
- International Outlook (7.5%): international students 2.5%, international staff 2.5%, international co-authorship 2.5% (plus studying abroad 0%).

- Subject top-10 leadership tally: US 68 of 111 top-10 slots (up from 67 of 110 last year); UK 29; China 7 (up from 4). Switzerland’s ETH Zurich is the only mainland-European top-10 entry (3rd in Computer Science, 9th in Physical Sciences). Only Harvard, Stanford and Cambridge appear in all 11 subjects’ top 10s.
- Overall top-50 country distribution (for a chart): USA ~22, UK ~6, China ~5, Canada ~3, Germany ~3, Switzerland ~2, Singapore ~2, plus Australia, Japan, Hong Kong (2 incl. CUHK), France and Belgium one or two each.
- Score availability: THE publishes numeric overall scores only for roughly the top 200 institutions overall. Subject tables publish ranks and country but not a single composite numeric “overall score,” so subject score-comparison charts should rely on individual pillar scores (e.g., the Business & Economics pillar figures above) rather than a composite.

- The US occupies exactly seven of the top 10 spots, but its top-500 presence fell to a record-low 102 institutions (down from a high of 125 in 2018) and 25 US institutions hit their lowest-ever positions — more than any other country.
- India is now the second most-represented country overall for the first time, with 128 institutions (up from 107 last year and just 19 in 2016), behind only the US with 171.
